A Cool Breeze For The Small Room: Low Profile Ceiling Fans

By: Matt Roberts

Perhaps you've been wondering what to do if you want to install some ceiling fans in your home, but have rooms that are very small. Perhaps you have a small youth (child) bedroom - perhaps a walk-in closet that is very small. Perhaps you or a previous owner have installed suspended ceilings, thereby reducing the height of the room. What do you do?

Your answer is to install one or more low profile ceiling fans. How are these fans different from the regular units? Well, the larger fan units are usually installed with a downrod - this is a metal rod that connects the fan unit (blades, lights and motor) with the ceiling overhead. You can get these downrods in many different lengths, but even the shortest of them might be too long for use in your smaller room.

Low profile ceiling fans solve that problem: they install directly to the ceiling without a downrod. This means that they will not hang down as low. They mount much closer - in some cases they mount flush with the ceiling itself.

And you won't have to sacrifice on quality or various features when you use a low profile ceiling fan. These units provide all the features of the larger units - they simply take up less space. Sometimes these units are referred to as 'hugger' or 'close-to-ceiling' models in the product listings.

After looking at all the available models, you are sure to find one that you like - but what if you don't? Well, a good alternative is to buy a regular ceiling fan and install it using a flush-mount kit. You can purchase these separately, and some regular ceiling fans also include them as an installation option.

When should you use low profile ceiling fans? Well, if your room has less than 8 feet of room height you should install one. If you have children you might also consider using them in their bedrooms, as they will not be as likely to jump up on their beds and hit their head or arms on the moving fan blades.

Please note: Because lower profile ceiling fans are closer to the ceiling they cannot move as much air as regular fans. You might not even notice it, but you should keep it in mind nevertheless.

A couple notes of caution: low profile ceiling fans MUST be properly installed. You must make sure that the mounting hardware is securely attached to the ceiling - it must be able to handle the vibration of the fan, as well as it's weight. It must also be wired properly (this will require the use of a special junction box). Honestly, if you are not the do-it-yourself type, you should contact your home remodeling professional and arrange for a knowledgeable workman to install it.
