A bad habit is a repeated pattern of behaviour , which is disliked by others or the person themselves. In some cases this habitual behaviour ,could be harmful to both parties. These habits are viewed as bad and harmful since they can be uncontrollable. When you think about addiction as a habit, that is a good explanation. When you think about your bad habits, you might not think addiction, but in actuality, they fall into the same category. What is the cause of addiction? Addictions are rooted to unhappy occurrences encountered during childhood. Research shows that children who are prone to addiction are those who have undergone physical maltreatment, embarrassment, degradation or were neglected. Alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, smoking and even overeating in excess , are some of the things that people are addicted to. If we put the point over in that way you might feel more motivated to get rid of any the addictions. You can classify addictions in 2 camps. Firstly you have stuff that find difficult to get rid of and secondly stuff you are use to doing . There are many misconceptions around bad habits or cravings and how they are taking over our society today. People say that cravings are dreadful and distressing. They say that it makes you obliged to live with something you don't like and that it can even rule your life. Habits or craving are difficult to resist. You can't just throw them aside. Habits occupy the mind and break your train of thoughts. Temptation to use eat or smoke a habit is always present. Habits are like hooks that in time becomes very difficult to get rid of. What about these false statements , do you believe them? Even if it says that it is irresistible, the truth is you can resist it. If you can do something else for as little as 21 days, you can change it and continue resisting it. The habit resisted will eventually pass into memory. Addictions to drugs, alcohol and smoking will need professional help, but in other things a belief in your ability to overcome a habit, gives you the self esteem to do it in most cases. Generally speaking willpower , distraction and dedication and a little effort will help you overcome them. Some habits are considered not harmful, but anything in excess is not a good thing. Just like drinking alcohol, you can drink occasionally, but if drinking in excess and every day can be detrimental. The best thing to do is just don't let your urges overpower you. Many Rehab centers are available , but you don't need a rehab center just to run away from a bad habit. In fact it is very difficult to find a rehab center to be able to stop a bad habit like excessive nail biting. Excessive nail biting is still a very bad habit anyway. The best ways to get rid of bad habits. If you think you are too weak to resist your urges, you will be. The truth of it is that this is just not true. Have faith in your ability to overcome and believe that you can fight them. All you need to do is follow these easy steps: When you are hit with an urge or craving, slow down, sit back and relax. Urges are transient, they come and they go. If you can slow down when it attacks your brain, and it keeps on harassing you, slow down and think of other things. Distract yourself until the urge passes. Get up and move if you have to - take a walk, turn on the television, anything that it takes to get your mind on something else. If your bad habit is smoking avoid places where smokers or smoking are present. The recent changes to smoke free zones, makes life a lot easier. If over indulgence is your addiction avoid places like candy shops or bakeries or supermarkets . Eat a healthy meal before going to a supermarket, to reduce the temptation. Mix with the people you admire for their good habits, slim people who are more likely to eat healthy meals, non- smokers who visit places where smokers aren't. Why put yourself is temptations way, when you can take these simple steps. Finding alternatives to your craving is a good way of reducing temptation. Crave for a candy bar ; eat a granola bar. Tempted for a cool beer; try a coffee or tea. In many ways you do the same for a child , by distracting them from something harmful. If sex is your problem add exercise . A good workout in the gym would replace your urge for sex. Take a walk, put on your ipod and walk to a park or just around the block. Exercise also cuts down on eating and smoking urges. If you're overweight and want to lose weight, look in the mirror at yourself naked. That will be motivation to change. Look at pictures of what you want to look like and it will motivate you to fight by your cravings. If none of this works, and your cravings and addiction is severe, seek an expert - your doctor or rehabilitation might be called for to get you started. In any case, take some action to break the habit you are struggling with. You are a winner as long as you continuously take action to change the habit.
